Nature worship took up much of the Pre-Vedic and Vedic religion and religion, leaving its residue long after the Aryan invasion, as late as today. The main rivers of India are still revered and worshiped as sacred and the Ganges, locally known as the Ganga takes the cake.
Originating in the chilly heights of the Himalayas in the Garhwal Range, the Ganges empties itself into the Bay of Bengal, making a crow's feet delta with a mangrove forest at its estuary. All along its course, the Ganges unfolds strikingly beautiful tourist destinations as varied as the mangrove forests of Sunderbans- home to the Royal Bengal Tiger and the Gangotri- the trekkers' and hikers' delight or Haridwar and Varanasi- the pilgrims' dream. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple at Varanasi is one of the most important and sacred Hindu temples in India.
The Gangotri Glacier, a vast expanse of ice five miles by fifteen, at the Garhwal Range in the Himalayas (14000 ft) in Uttaranchal, is the source of Bhagirathi, which joins with Alaknanda (origins nearby) to form Ganga at the craggy canyon-carved town of Devprayag.
The Ganges or Goddess Ganga according to the epic Mahabharata was the mother of Vishma an eminent character in the epic. According to another myth, as Goddess Ganga followed Bhagiratha from heaven or swarga to earth, Lord Siva caught the magnificent fall of Ganga on his head in his long hair.
The Ganges now attracts lakhs of tourists and pilgrims every year from in and outside the country. And since the Ganges is one of the most important rivers, the tourist spots along the Ganges are all well developed and offer all the necessary facilities like hotels, motels, and eateries.
