Belur
Belur was an important Hoysala capital and is famous for the Chennakeshava Temple, one of Karnataka's most celebrated architectural monuments. The temple is renowned for its detailed sculptures, graceful bracket figures, narrative panels and elaborate ornamental work. Stone was used almost like a medium for jewellery, allowing artisans to create remarkable levels of detail. The temple complex also preserves important inscriptions and artistic traditions associated with the Hoysala period. Belur offers visitors an opportunity to study architecture at close quarters while experiencing the living religious traditions surrounding the monument. Together with Halebidu and Somanathapura, it forms a major Hoysala heritage circuit.
