Pattadakal
Pattadakal is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural site renowned for its group of early medieval temples. The monuments demonstrate a remarkable interaction between northern Nagara and southern Dravidian architectural traditions. Built mainly during the Chalukyan period, the temples display sophisticated plans, sculptural programmes and decorative details. The Virupaksha, Mallikarjuna and Papanatha temples are particularly important. Pattadakal's significance lies not only in individual monuments but also in the architectural experimentation represented by the entire complex. Combined with Aihole and Badami, the site forms one of Karnataka's most important heritage circuits for travellers interested in archaeology, temple architecture and early Indian history.
