Tiruchirappalli
Tiruchirappalli, commonly known as Trichy, is an important historic city on the banks of the Kaveri River. Its most prominent landmark is the Rockfort, rising dramatically above the city and crowned by historic temples. The nearby island of Srirangam is home to the vast Ranganathaswamy Temple, one of the most important Vaishnavite centres in India. The city and its surroundings reveal layers of Chola, Nayak and later architectural traditions. Tiruchirappalli also serves as an important gateway to several major temple destinations in Tamil Nadu. Its combination of history, religion, architecture and riverine landscapes makes it an important stop on a South Indian heritage itinerary.
