Mahabalipuram
Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram, is one of India's great centres of ancient stone architecture. Located on the Coromandel Coast, the town is celebrated for its Pallava monuments dating from the 7th and 8th centuries. The Shore Temple, Pancha Rathas and magnificent rock reliefs demonstrate the extraordinary skill of early South Indian sculptors. The famous Descent of the Ganges, carved into a vast rock surface, is particularly impressive. Mahabalipuram also offers a pleasant coastal atmosphere, traditional stone-carving workshops and opportunities to observe living craft traditions. Its combination of archaeology, architecture, mythology and the sea makes it an exceptional cultural destination.
