Halebidu
Halebidu was the capital of the Hoysala kingdom and contains some of the finest examples of medieval South Indian temple sculpture. The Hoysaleswara Temple is particularly remarkable for its richly carved exterior, featuring mythological narratives, deities, animals, dancers and intricate ornamental details. Despite centuries of political change and damage, the surviving sculpture demonstrates extraordinary craftsmanship. The surrounding archaeological landscape helps visitors understand the former importance of the Hoysala capital. Halebidu is especially rewarding when combined with Belur and Somanathapura, allowing travellers to compare different expressions of Hoysala architecture and appreciate the development of medieval temple design.
