Tanjore
Tanjore, or Thanjavur, was a major centre of the Chola kingdom and remains one of Tamil Nadu's great cultural destinations. The Brihadisvara Temple, commissioned by Rajaraja Chola I, is the city's defining monument and one of the finest examples of Chola architecture. Thanjavur is also renowned for its classical music, dance, painting and traditional crafts. The distinctive Thanjavur paintings, with their rich decorative details and gold work, represent a celebrated artistic tradition. The Royal Palace complex and its collections provide additional historical context.
