Gangaikonda Cholapuram
Gangaikonda Cholapuram was established by Rajendra Chola I as the capital of the Chola Empire. Its magnificent Brihadisvara Temple is one of the outstanding achievements of Chola architecture. Although the ancient capital itself has largely disappeared, the surviving temple provides an impressive insight into the political power, artistic achievements and religious traditions of the Chola period. Its sculptural details and monumental proportions demonstrate the sophistication of medieval Tamil architecture. The site forms an important part of the Chola temple heritage of Tamil Nadu.
